Today the event starts at Fifth Avenue and Thirty-Sixth Street. It pro- ceeds down Fifth to Eighth Street where it turns right toward Christopher Street. Marchers pass in front of the Stonewall Inn site of the 1969 riots that marked a turning point in the modern gay rights movement. The march concludes at Christopher and Greenwich Streets. All along the route crowds of well-wishers cheerand they keep it up until the last marching group has passed long into the evening.
